Marriage and divorce registrations
Marriage registrations
If the marriage is between a foreign national and a Japanese citizen, please file a Marriage Registration at the City Office of the Japanese person’s permanent address or present address. If the marriage is between two foreign nationals, please register at the City Office of the couple’s present address. Be sure to inquire in advance as to the necessary documents.
Divorce registrations
In the case of a divorce between a foreign national and a Japanese citizen, please file registration at the City Office of the Japanese person’s permanent address or present address. If the divorce is between two foreign nationals, please file registration at the City Office of the present address. Be sure to inquire in advance as to the necessary documents. (In some cases, you cannot get divorced under Japanese law if you do not have an address in Japan. Please inquire in advance.)
Birth and death notices
Birth notices
Please notify the City Office within 14 days of a birth. Besides a completed birth notice form, you will need the following documents:1.Birth certificate (prepared by the hospital), 2. Mother and Child Health Handbook (Boshi Techo), and 3. NHI certificate, for those who are members of National Health Insurance.
Note.With the birth of a child, you must complete various application procedures, such as obtaining a passport (at the particular foreign embassy) and acquisition of status of residence (at the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau).
Death notices
Please submit a completed death notice form with a death certificate prepared by a physician within seven days of learning of the death. For more detail, please contact Residents and Family Registration Division, Family Registration Section.
