If power goes off in the entire house

Use of too many appliances at one time, exceeding the contracted amperage, or a short circuit caused by equipment malfunctions or a damaged cord may automatically trip the breaker switch. Either reduce the number of appliances in use or, in case of a short circuit, turn off the appliances that were in use, and then flip the breaker switch.

Caution

To reduce the risk of fire from overheated cords and sockets, avoid running a large number of extension cords from the same socket.

Gas

Gas varieties differ by location. The gas supplied in the Shibuya area is type 13A. When purchasing new gas appliances check to make sure that they are compatible with type 13A gas.

If you smell gas

1. First, shut off the main valves.
2. Open some doors and windows. City gas is lighter than air so it will dissipate in the atmosphere.
3. Sparks from the ventilation fan or lights may cause an explosion so under no circumstance should you touch any electric power switches.
4. If there is a gas leak contact Tokyo Gas immediately. They will respond on public holidays or at night in case of an emergency.

Water

Japan’s tap water is potable. When moving to a new place, you may have to ask the Bureau of Waterworks to turn on the water.

Water leaks

Shut off the main valve in the water meter box and contact the waterworks bureau. If you live in an apartment discuss the problem with the custodian. Water leaks from taps are easily fixed by changing the packing.

Sewage precautions

1. Garbage disposal units cannot be installed.
2. Please do not flush garbage other than toilet paper down the toilet.
3. Beware of fake sewerage maintenance staff.
