Converting your foreign driver’s license into a Japanese driver’s license
It is possible to convert your foreign driver’s license into a Japanese driver’s license. The procedures can be done at a driver’s license test center but you must first meet the following
conditions to qualify:
- The foreign driver’s license must be valid (an expired license may not be transferred).
- You must prove that you lived in the country of the foreign driver’s license for a total of three months or longer.
When completing the procedures, you will be tested for vision and color-blindness, as well as for knowledge and skills concerning simple traffic regulations.
Necessary documents
- Foreign driver’s license (original) and a translation certified by the embassy or JAF (Japan Automobile Federation)
- Passport
- A copy of your residence record ( juminhyo) (the type with your My Number written on it), your health insurance card, basic resident registrar card ( jumin kihon daicho card), passport, etc.
- One photo (3 cm long x 2.4 cm wide)
International driver’s licenses
Any citizen of a country that is a signatory to the Convention on Road Traffic who possesses an international driver’s license can drive in Japan. However, an international license is only valid for one year and cannot be renewed in Japan.
Change of address
If you change your address, you must file a notification at your local driver’s license test center or police station. Please call your local police station or driver’s license test center for more information.
Acquiring a new license in Japan
To obtain a new license in Japan you must take lessons at a driving school and pass a test at a driver’s license test center. You may take the written test in English. Other prefectures also have test centers where you can take the written
test in Chinese, Portuguese, Vietnamese or Tagalog.
