There are 9 city libraries and 1 service spot in Shibuya. These offer on-site browsing and borrowing as well reference services to assist with research and document reservation services. The libraries also hold events such as storytelling sessions and film showings.

Borrowing books

Borrowing books

User registration is required to borrow books.
There are two user registration methods: registration through the official Shibuya LINE account or in person when visiting the library. When visiting, please bring ID with your home address, such as a residence card or My Number card. Up to 30 books/magazines and 10 CDs or cassette tapes can be checked out for two weeks.

Returning items

Borrowed items can be returned to any library in Shibuya. If the library is closed simply drop the materials in the book slot at the front entrance. Note that CDs must be returned directly to the library counter.

Book searches and orders

With “Kensakukun,” a search resource available in each library, you can use an online computer to search through
and reserve materials housed in the Shibuya libraly system. You can also use a similar service from the Shibuya libraries
home page. Additionally, a request service allows you to reserve materials that have been checked out, or books
located in other libraries. Please note that each library features a useful reference service housing a wide variety of
reference works.

Materials at the libraries

Foreign Books Corner

The Chuo Library has a Foreign Books Corner, primarily with books in English. Aside from that, A wide range of books, including novels and books on Japanese life and culture, as well as picture books, are available.

CDs Corner

CDs are available at the Central Library.

Children’s books

Young children and elementary school students can also use the children’s corner which offer picture books, picture cards, and children’s tales (Excludes Sasazuka Library and Shirane Library Service Spot)
