Why You received the Notification of NHI（なぜ納入通知書が届いたのか）

Notification of Premium Determination（保険料の決定通知）

Households enrolled in NHI as of April 1st, or those that enroll later in the fiscal year, will have their insurance premiums calculated.
The calculation of premiums is based on each NHI enrollee in the same household, and the premiums are then totaled for the household.
The total amount due is presented on the notification, which will be mailed to the head of the household.

Notification of Change（保険料の変更通知）

When there is any change in the number of enrollees, the amount of declared earnings, or any other changes that affect the premiums, the total amount due will be recalculated.
A notification of the change in premium amount will be mailed to the head of the household.

Calculation of Premiums（保険料の計算）

They are calculated on a fiscal year basis from April to the following March, subject to the enrollment month.
Insurance premiums consist of the following components:
1) Per capita charge, calculated based on the number of insured persons
2) Income-based charge, calculated based on the previous year's income of each enrollee

Premium Due Date（納期限）

The premiums are due on the last day of each month. If the last day of the month is a bank holiday,
then they are due on the following business day.

Failure to Pay a Premium by the Due Date（納期限までに納めなかったら）

If your premium is not paid by the due date, we will send a reminder letter and payment demand to the head of the household.
Late fees may also be applied.
If you continue to fail to pay your insurance premiums without a valid reason, your property may be subject to seizure.

If you feel your premiums are high（保険料が高いと感じたら）

If you feel your premiums are high, they may have been calculated without information on your income from the previous year.
If you meet all of the following four conditions, “7割軽減” (70% reduction) is shown on the right side of the Notification (the section shown in the image).

1. You are a single-person household.
2. You were not living in Japan as of January 1st of the year for which the insurance premium is calculated.
3. You had no income in Japan during the previous year.
4. You have submitted the “Declaration on income conditions” to National Health Insurance Division, Qualification Section.

If “7割軽減” is not displayed, you may not have submitted the “Declaration on income conditions”.

If you were living in Japan as of January 1st of the year for which the insurance premium is calculated, you must file a resident tax return with the municipality where you were registered as a resident on January 1st.
