Garbage and Recycling

Garbage collection

Shibuya City collects garbage by type--burnable trash, non-burnable trash, and recyclable resources (garbage that can be reused). Burnable trash is collected twice a week; non-burnable trash is collected once a week; and recyclable resources are collected once a week. Please take the garbage to the designated collection site by 8 a.m. on the designated collection day. Trash collection days vary according to the local community--check the signs at the collection site in your neighborhood for the schedule or ask the waste collection office, your landlord, or your neighbors.

Burnable (regular) trash

Kitchen waste, scrap paper, and other burnable trash should be placed in a plastic bin or other receptacle. When disposing of garbage in a bag, please use the garbage bag recommended for the 23 cities of Tokyo.

Examples of combustible garbage
Kitchen scraps, milk, juice, and other beverage cartons, paper diapers (please flush waste matter down the toilet), sanitary products, cooking oil (absorb oil in paper/cloth or use a solidifying agent), clothing, etc.

Non-burnable trash

Items that cannot be burned such as metal, glass and ceramics, as well as items that are not appropriate for burning, such as plastic, rubber and leather, are disposed of as non-burnable trash. Please dispose of non-burnable trash in a container as well. When disposing of garbage in a bag, please use a transparent or semi-transparent bag so that the contents can be seen.
* PET bottles are collected at supermarkets, convenience stores and liquor stores. Remove the cap, rinse the inside and crush the bottle flat before disposal in the collection box in front of the store.

Examples of non-burnable trash
Spray cans (use up contents completely before disposal -- you do not need to pierce a hole in the container), plastic items, plastic food wrap, rubber and leather items, dry-cell batteries (return button-type batteries to the store), glass and fluorescent lights (wrap sharp objects such as glass, needles and knives in paper and mark it “” [Dangerous]), cassette tapes, etc.

Recyclable resources

Although newspapers, magazines, cardboard boxes, bottles and cans are collected as recyclable resources, please dispose of these items in “group collections” conducted by community associations and the PTA as much as possible.

Items that are not collected by the Waste Collection Office

  1. Toxic items, hazardous items and items with offensive smells (such as gas cylinders, petroleum, photographic chemicals and car batteries)
  2. Automobiles, motorcycles, tires and pianos (collection company referral service available)

Large-sized trash and electric appliance recycling

Large-sized trash

Unwanted furniture with dimensions of 30 cm or more, electric household appliances (excluding the four appliances specified in the Electric Appliance Recycling Law; see section below), bicycles and skis are collected for a fee as large sized trash. Since collection is conducted on an appointment basis, please call the Large-sized Waste Reception Center in advance for an appointment. You must purchase a Large-sized Trash Fee Sticker at a convenience store, write your name on the sticker and attach the sticker to your garbage before disposal.
Since the large-sized trash will be collected at the home of the applicant, do not take it to the collection site. For those who live in community housing such as condominium complexes, please take the large-sized garbage down to the ground floor.

Electric appliance recycling

Recycling is required by law for four types of appliances--
air conditioners, TVs, refrigerators and washing machines -- and these may not be collected as large-sized trash. To dispose of these items, please ask the original store of purchase or the store where you are buying a replacement to take care of your used appliance. Upon pickup, you must pay a transportation fee and a recycling fee. If you are having trouble finding an outlet which will take your used appliance, please call the Electric Appliance Recycling Reception Center.

Personal computer recycling

Personal computers sold before September 30, 2003 (i.e., which do not bear the PC recycling mark) are collected and recycled by computer manufacturers. To dispose of a computer, please contact the manufacturer and pay the collection and recycling fee. Computers are collected using the Japan Post “Yupack” service.

Group collections

Block associations (chonaikai), local governments (jichikai), PTAs, and other groups promote recycling by collecting newspapers, magazines, empty cans and bottles, and other recyclable items generated in the home and then having collection companies take care of these items in large lots.
Shibuya supports these registered groups.

Swap meet

Shibuya holds a swap meet to encourage recycling of items that families no longer need at home.

Honmachi Recycle Center and Namikibashi Recycle Center

Unwanted wood furniture is picked up and sold as a second-hand item. Used paper, empty cans, empty bottles, rags and old clothes are also collected and recycled.
* Only the Namikibashi Recycle Center accepts furniture pickups, and the handling fee is about the same as for large-sized trash.
